When you become a fan of Korean music, it's easy to get lost in the big old international fandom that is busy dealing with scandals, idol fanwars, the latest haircuts, etc, etc. But it might excite you that there is more to Korean music - even Kpop, than this! Far more! The big old International fandom - as gigantic as it is, often misses out a big proportion of the media, and music from S.Korea, mainly because these bands tend not to have idolising-intentions, nor stem from the big major companies.
In this post, I shall briefly mention some fantastic K-indie and Kpop bands that might have alluded your eye, while are still enriched in talent. They might sound a bit different, but don't forget, this is large part of Korean music too. Big pat on the back if you recognise any.
Quick Note: I've noticed the music I have posted below seems to go from quite elaborate funk to soft, mellow music, but hey, it shows variety I guess!
Glen Check
Whoa. There really isn't anything else to mention. They are seriously good.
Frenzy (프렌지)
Frenzy is Korean shoegaze indie band that seriously needs more love.
I wrote about them here.
There is no singer, but they are masters of sound.
Mongoose
The singer's voice will be higher than you expect, but it's easy to go along with. This is a synth-y, pretty funky band. The bassist has some groovy rhythms.
Standing Egg
A pretty chilled band. Got to say, I particularly like their music video for 'lalala', as featured above. Standing Egg is great to listen when you're feeling down, or just need some background music for work - they're very uplifting and easy listening.
Adulthood (어른아이)
Adulthood is mellow and beautiful. The lyrics are often minimal, but sang in different ways when the singer repeats them.
Vodka Rain
I really like this band. I don't know if it's partly because of their name, but it's defiantly because they are so cheerful and easy to love, really quirky, and just a delight to listen to.

Five years ago it'd be completely unheard of - a major Kpop band selling out in London?! But the Hallyu wave is at it's peek, and sure enough, BIGBANG managed to sell out a concert at Wembley stadium within 10 minutes.
In fact, it was so popular, there will be ANOTHER another concert at the same venue the day after! And guess what, that sold out to.
And how much were these tickets?
£60.
Yup, fans are crazy enough to fork out for massively overpriced tickets, because the option to miss the opportunity of seeing one of the biggest Korean bands was unacceptable. Is this the start of a happy future of kpop bands visiting the UK, or is this the highest peak the Hallyu wave can ever reach?
Lets consider the moment, when Korean music hit the UK media with the famous 'Gangnam Style'. Love it or loathe it - it reached number #1 in the UK charts, and has been the subject of international attention. Celebrities, politicians, and general media has been keen on associating themselves with the dance. What effect has this on the general public in regards to Kpop music? Well, there are two sides you can take for that question.
The Optimistic View
Because of Gangnam style, people are more likely to look at other sources of kpop.
The Realist View
Because of Gangnam style, people will associate ALL kpop with Gangnam style, and still won't break into the Kpop market.
Will Kpop ever be taken seriously? Predictions can only be made on sketchy grounds. Here's another; Do we want Kpop to be taken seriously by the public? Think carefully on this one.
Am I the only one cringing? No?
It's not that I want kpop to not be enjoyed with international success.
But this Hallyu wave is brewing an issue here that is quite unsettling.
Greed. The craving for blood. Total insanity.
Kpop fans are turning into monsters.
Ooo, did I just say that?
Please don't kill me yet and let me finish.
Lets take Britian for example.
Kpop obviously has a lot of fans for two Wembley Big Bang concerts. And that's great! The sheer mass of fangirl and fanboy brings the bands to the UK, bands I never thought I'd ever see.
But a lot of these fans don't really get kpop, and treat this as normal pop.
There is a reason why I don't like normal pop.
Okay, several reasons.
But the sheer idolism and fanbase is a massive turn off.
And while Korean idolism can be crazy, British idolism can be just as insane. Screaming at their idols in public, even hugging them - which is considered completely out of order in South Korea. You do not glomp members of Exo-K, even if they're you're bias. At least ask. These girls didn't.
A lot of people in the western world do not understand or get the culture behind the music, and that's well... Quite embarassing. I'm not Korean, nor have I been to S.Korea. At the end of the day, I don't even know much about the culture. But something doesn't sit right when I hear people talk to kpop as if they know and understand it well.
Am I just being touchy that my hidden gem has been discovered?
I'll leave you with this:
Do we need an understanding of culture to enjoy and appreciate music, and go to concerts? Or is it unfair to ask the public to mould themselves to the rules of other cultures, and that it is the arriving culture that must mould themselves to their audience? What do you think?
Competition to dominate the music industry in East Asia has never been more fierce, and now the battle has finally crashed into the Indigo2 arena in London, Greenwich. South Korean bands 4minute, Exo-K and Norazo will be playing to a sold out audience on the 23rd of June, with up to 364 potential fans to attend a gift event for their favourite musicians. Has South Korean music finally settled into Europe?
I can't remember exactly when I began to think this, but it has been on my mind for a while. The big boys of Super Junior has been a fantastic band, but many of their songs are filmed in very similiar conditions, and their producers seem very careful to prevent them from doing anything new. This is the same case for many other well established boy bands, and a lot of girl bands like Girls Generation. Actually, this might be more of an issue with girl bands - how many songs have you come across that are the usual boy meets girl, for some reason they cannot be together, *insert heart felt dramaticness here*. Alright girls and boys, you've done this storyline very well now, lets have a bit of something new, yeah?
And then suddenly, my hopes and dreams were answered.
This has been a fantastic year for kpop male debuts, (last year the spotlight was on some fantastic female kpop groups!) and they have reached beyond my expectations. The bands that where the most successful where the ones that weren't afraid to be different and avoid the overcooked trends. Music companies in South Korea - please let this be a lesson to you and please give our older bands some love and attention too. (While you're at it, perhaps you could cut the whole slave contract thing and pay your performers a bit more too?) I am going to focus on my two most favourite debuts, B.A.P and Exo.
B.A.P
WHAT'S THE NAME OF THE GAME? IT'S B.A.P!
Ahoy, you've arrived to the land of blond boy band B.A.P, with their fantastic debut single, Warrior.
I love this song.
It's wonderfully manly, it has a different storyline, it has a strange looking bunny smashing up a car.... This video has everything! The song is incredibly catchy, and I love the attempt to make these boys look tough. It's quite hard for a Kpop band to look so macho these days - with all the makeup that is rubbed on their faces but B.A.P did a pretty good job of persuading me.
Also, the rapping in song is brilliant. I usually cringe when kpop songs feature rapping because it usually isn't very good, but B.A.P is an exception - and they're brilliant. Fantastic debut.
Ah yes, I also found quite a cool dance cover which I think deserves a couple more views~
Exo
This is one big debut.
Whatever you may think of this, you can't dismiss that they didn't make an effort when it came to production. Exo is basically a band with two version versions, a korean version, and a chinese version. It's a little confusing, both both groups are fantastic. Exo-M is the chinese verson, and Exo-K is the korean version, and the later is the debuting band above. This band has a lot of trailers, and the company they're under made a huge fuss about them. Fans anticipated Exo's debut, but I don't think amyone expected this!

(This one is sung by Exo-M, but both versions are very similiar.)
The point is, the prologue single 'Where is the love' is a very different song compared to the 'MAMA'.
MAMA has a bit of everything in it - a catchy song, chanting, crazy video effects, an interesting but a little weird storytelling (in English) at the beginning... There is a crazy, crazy storyline in this music video that I can honestly say I don't really get, but not that it matters. The power looks cool and the song is very catchy. I really like Exo's effort with this, and I'm really looking forward to see what they do next.

The only negative thing about this review is that I personally disagree with the sudden 'screaming' from Kai, one of the members with his face covered in 'tattoos.' That is actually one of my favourite things about the song! Other than that, I enjoyed the review! What do you think readers?

It's been a while since I've updated this blog, mainly because I've not had time to be in sync with the Kpop/Jrock community for a while. However, there's a couple of things I'd like to mention in this post:
Otaku House
I'm really starting to like http://www.otakuhouse.com/. I've never actually brought anything from their stores, but I really prefer the community much better to Tokyo Toys. If, and more likely when I buy something from Otaku House I'll be sure to review it - but I guess the main reason is that they are firmly against SOPA. It's quite obvious why - they'd lose a heck of a lot of business - I guess I just liked their vocal detest against it. Even if they stole someone elses' meme. If you're fine with frequent FB posts and a heck of a lot of cosplay competitions, you might wish to check out their FB Page.
Concerts and Conventions
In London at least, there's a lot of jrock/anime action coming to town!
Starting with the closer events.... Two interesting conventions will be held in London in February.
With their tagline as "London's Anime and Gaming Convention" London Anime Con will be taking place next weekend. With an 18+ requirement and an interesting 'clan system' does this look to be the new alternative to 'London Expo'?
No.
The London Anime Con is part of the AnimeLeague, which is run by the famous "Mr Towers", who is infamous among the anime community. Their general miscommuication and drama usually seed events to fail before they bloom, so I wouldn't count on this convention to compete at all with the famous London Expo.
Is it worth attending?
Maybe - If you are happy to part with £10. If not, you might want to check out Hyper Japan instead.
For an extra £2 on the ticket price you get professional quality and a real alternative to London Expo. If you're fed up of walking up and down the crowded Excel Centre for an empty seat that does not exist and staring at overpriced merchandise you can't afford - Hyper Japan may be able to rekindle your love for conventions. What makes its stand out is that it is a Culture Convention. That means delicious cuisine, traditional and modern art, films and various other aspects of Japanese culture will have their own stalls. So this time you'll be able to walk down the event looking at overpriced objects you can't afford and won't ever see again =)
Hyper Japan does have a few stars visiting that some readers may find interesting, such as Natsuko Aso. I am not a fan of j-pop but I've heard she's quite popular, which might be enough to persuade you to go.
But because I like Jrock so much, I can detect an awesome presence coming to the UK... Yes, I am certain that L'Arc~En~Ciel will be in London on the 11th April, £56.50 for a ticket.

You heard me right. According to Dada-san from Versailles, (Seriously he's awesome, go add his FB and understand what I'm referring to) Jrock isn't doing too well overseas, and to cover up the costs? Scary ticket prices. The band is amazing though, so is it worth it?
Out of London, there is also Cam Con which some people are quite excited about, as it means finally a local convention in Cambridge. I'm not too sure about it, and as it's so close to London Expo - So I won't be attending, but I'll be looking forward to see how it goes. I hope it goes well, simply because Cambridge isn't too far away from me back at home - it'd be nice to meet some local anime fans.
Not to mention Music Bank in Paris on Tuesday! May not be in London or the UK (well duh) but I know a lot of you UK folks are coming.

One last thing to mention, how on Earth did I get so many views?? 873 hits all time is something pretty cool, even if they were google image searches for visual kei pictures.
Popular k-pop boy band U-Kiss recently performed on stage their new(ish) single, 'Neverland' with a little bit of an unexpected twist.
Okay, it never actually quite hits the genre on the head, but there's certainly some kind of seasoning from Dubstep
land in this performance. I'm not sure if I like this or not, but before I say anything else I have to admit that I'm not actually a U-Kiss fan. But perhaps this song could change my ways.
At the beginning it starts out as a little intro - oh, look, they're all dressing up as vampires today, la la la. I like their costumes but feel they could have been better. It was cool to see the cloaks disappear in complete sync though, and their style is fairly cool. (Little bit too much eye makeup though?)
The specific new take on the song begins at 1:55 in my opinion. That is when it starts sounding like a Clazziquai dance track. And I absoloutely love Clazziquai. The light 'wub' at 2:07 is quite good - I could only wish it was done a little heavier and the dancing at this specific point could have been a little more impressive. Sorry U-Kiss fans... I blame it on the fact I associate the dubstep sound with very highly skilled dance routines...;; And well... Your lovely boys are good at dancing, just not the specific style I was hoping to see.
Am I forgiven? Yes? Oh good. I'll continue then~~
The original version of the song is nice, I thought for some reason the dancing in the video was a lot better - but maybe it's because it's easier to see them? I don't know. The song itself has got me interested in what U-Kiss can do, and I will certainly be less dismissive of them in the future. I do hope that the current k-pop cliché to tell the 'DJ' to 'turn it up' will stop very soon. Honestly guys and girls of kpop land, it's really not cool.
Fans of TVXQ are currently buzzing over an exceptional performance on Maximum earlier today. The song itself isn't my favourite of the band's releases, but I absolutely love watching YunHo sing his heart out, and the dancing was amazing! Although I will always prefer the band to be with the full five members, this was pretty brilliant to watch.
I am happy to announce that L~Arc en Ceil is visiting the the UK capital's O2 Arena to preform at April the 11th.
And about time too!
Tickets cost a whopping £55, with £111 being the price of 'special' tickets. We're not sure how 'special' these tickets are, but there's a rumour going around they're for a meet and greet. It'd be insanely awesome to see the band up close by my goodness it's expensive. I've not decided if I'll go yet, but... This is such a rare opportunity, I'm seriously tempted.
Over to Kpop world,
C.N.Blue and F.T.Island have confirmed that they are also due to preform in the UK! There is no date set, but it's meant to be 'early next year'. I only hope it isn't as late notice as the SHINee concert....
I think it's time to start saving up your pocket money UK readers, because it looks like next year is set to be busy!

So now you have a taste of good, clean, excellent music, it's time to introduce three Korean pop songs which we know for some reason we really shouldn't like them, but for some reason or another, it turns out that we're actually COMPLETELY ADDICTED. Yes, I'm going on about those kind of songs. And what better way to start of than with SNSD's Gee.
The song is cheesy, far too cute, and very repetitive. Usually I'd absoloutely hate a song like this, but Girl's Generation has a specific charm that no human being can resist. Somehow, I'm pulled into this magical power, and I'm going all Gee Gee Gee Gee for S-N-S-D.
Random Fact:This song is so loved by k-poppers it was used at a flash mob in London.
Also, aren't coloured jeans supposed to be in fashion now? Looks like this band is way ahead on trends ;)
Yes, I love this song. And you will too, once you've listened it a couple of times. SHINee's Ring Ding Dong isn't my worst guilty k-pop addiction, because if you listen to it, it's actually pretty good. I'll be honest, I didn't notice this at first but after a day or two this became the song I was listening to all day ! I love their groovy dancing.

Next up is a song by one of the biggest Hallyu stars, he's appeared in multiple hollywood films, and have created many albums of awesomeness. And now for his most guilty pleasure song ever created...
Rainism -- song, danced, acted, entertained by the one and only Rain Bi. There really isn't much explanation needed in this one, even the lyrics are something that would cause me to stop watching this video. But.

Just.
Far.
Too.
Sexy.
You also have to understand that Rain Bi a king, he can get away with having a big ego, having the power to stop random people growling at him, and just having that aura of cool.
Sadly, he's joined the military now, but I look forward to his come back in two years time...

I'm never 100 % happy when my beloved fandoms enters the UK media, ever since the cosplay-expo incident. Nevertheless, the Hallyu Wave has snuck right in, landing an article in the London tabloid, 'Evening Standard'. I found out about the news here which pretty much says exactly what the actually article says here. In this blog however, I'm going to review the article in a slightly different way.
By looking at it with a stupidly bias method to provoke absoloute insanity amongst readers.

So anyway, I start reading the article, and with my suspicious face on I saw this. Already my bias grows tenfold.

Damn you journalist, you're just referring to this awful camera work from the new Super Junior single... Which was also quite a disappointment as it sounded pretty much the same as their other songs....

Popular band "JYJ" has recently released new single "Get Out" which got me completely hooked! Their sound, dancing and overall performance has dramatically decreased from their debut -- come now, enough of that hate. You really can't deny the increase of quality with new songs such as "Get Out" and "In Heaven" compared to "Ayy Girl".

The one negative point I would like to point about is that "Get Out" has a storyline that has been overused in the kpop generation, and personally, I think Taegoon's "Call Me" uses the whole "Two/Three timing girlfriend who actually isn't a nice girl and the guys call her and ask her what's going on" thing better. I'm sorry JYJ, but innocent Taegoon actually gets shot because of the evil girlfriend. By JaeJoong, one of the members in JYJ coincidentally enough!
Actually, if I think about it, when TVXQ were together, didn't they have a song...
And so does SHINee!
Okay, it's official. South Korea loves phones.
Attempting to move slightly back on topic, JYJ is certainly becoming a professional band of their own, with their own style, and their own talent. I think the history between TVXQ and JYJ will be for another blog, but I can't help but miss the harmony when the five boys were together. If you hear a great song from TVXQ, or a great song from JYJ, just imagine how MORE GREAT that sound could have been if they were together...
The Hallyu Wave has crashed into popular series Glee, and will be preformed by Harry Shum Jr who plays "Mike Chang" , funnily enough described by my friend as an Asian guy who once held the title of "can't sing". Oh boy, dearest Harry Shum Jr, you have got a big weight on your shoulders to get this right. Of all songs of Super Junior, he has been given this one which is defiantly not Suju's best single...
That's right, of all songs to represent Super Junior they choose Mr Simple. Ouch. Will this be a good moment for the Hallyu Wave to spread its wings over the world, or will it be a moment where kpop fans lower their heads in shame? I fear the worst.

I haven't found any other website that gives new Visual Kei bands such a warm welcome.

Whether you're into mystery or horror, you'll find something here. The website contains a variety of dramas from Japan, Korean, Taiwan and more.

So I was wondering why suddenly on facebook, all my friends seemed to suddenly be into Mona Lisa. Then I looked on the allkpop.com site, and saw...
Yup, MBLAQ is back with their new track, Mona Lisa. The song is so typically MBLAQ, though it has a 'Spanish/French' like element to it which is refreshing. With an MBLAQ song, it's not only the sound of it that's important. Do remember, this is a South Korean band so... Looks, clothes, dance moves, and the music video as a whole is vital for success. But has MBLAQ managed to succeed this time?
They may have trouble.
The Lyrics.
First of all, a typical trap for many a Korean band, is called the Rushed Lyricist. Got a song to write? Only have fifteen minutes? This is why you get. The ol' broken English and 'lalalala'. The song hasn't suffered from bad English phrases (they're pronoucation is actually pretty good) but there is frequent 'lalalala' moments which although it is entertaining to listen and watch a male sexy group sing 'lalalala'... it's not that cool. It's as manly as this guy. (Crossdressing Kevin for the win!) Oh, and isn't this meant to be somewhat a serious song...?
The Sound.
Secondly... I can't hear their actual, lovely, amazing voices. Yet again, auto-tune is eating away at these boys' talent. And it's a real shame. LISTEN J. """Tune""" Entertainment I SAID IT'S A REAL SHAME.

But I have to say, despite this the sound is SO incredibly catchy. Just one play through and it lasts in your head for a long while. Seriously. Expect to hear that song when you go to bed, when you wake up, brush your teeth, and all through the next day after.
Costumes
There isn't much to comment on the costumes - they're constantly changing, and the stylist hasn't done anything outragious that I can be cynical on. So, moving on...
The dancing.
Oh boy the dancing.
I'm loving this "manly" *cough* air guitar thing they've got going on here. Luckily it doesn't last for very long, otherwise the very, very cool and casual dancing these MBLAQ boys have got going on would be completely wasted. Oh, you didn't miss read that. I actually really like the dancing style. Even when their trying to be 'gangster' nodding to the music with their shiny silver car. It's beautiful.
Verdict
The more I think about this song, the more positive my review becomes. Perhaps it's because I really love MBLAQ and I'm very bias towards them. Perhaps it's because they are rather attractive men. Perhaps because the song is actually pretty decent.
Somehow, I think it's all three of them.
